What Is My IP Address?

Your public IP address, location, and network details — detected instantly.

What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network. It serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

There are two versions in active use today: IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1), which uses 32-bit numbers, and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:db8::1), which uses 128-bit numbers to accommodate the explosion of internet-connected devices.

How does IP lookup work?

When you visit this page, your browser makes a request to our API provider, which reads your public IP address from the HTTP connection. The API then cross-references IP allocation databases (maintained by RIRs like ARIN, RIPE, APNIC) to return geolocation and network ownership data — all in real time, no installation required.

Public vs. Private IP

Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and visible to websites you visit. Your private IP is used within your local network (home router, office LAN) and is not directly visible on the internet.

Dynamic vs. Static IP

Most residential connections use a dynamic IP that changes periodically. Businesses and servers often pay for a static IP that remains constant — useful for hosting websites, VPNs, and remote access.

VPN and IP masking

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) routes your traffic through a server in another location, replacing your real IP with the VPN server's IP. This is widely used for privacy, security, and bypassing geo-restrictions.

IP geolocation accuracy

IP geolocation can identify your country with ~99% accuracy, your city to within 50–100 km in most cases. Exact street-level location is not possible from an IP address alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address right now?

Your current public IP address is shown at the top of this page and is detected automatically when you load the page. It is the IP address that the internet sees when you connect from your current network.

Can websites see my IP address?

Yes. Every web server you connect to receives your public IP address as part of the HTTP request. This is how the internet routes responses back to you. To hide your IP, you can use a VPN, Tor, or a proxy service.

How do I find someone else's IP address?

You can look up any IP address using the "Look up any IP" form above. Simply enter the IP address and click "Look Up" to see its geolocation and network information. Note that private IP addresses (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) are not publicly routable and will not return useful results.

What does my IP address reveal about me?

Your public IP reveals your approximate geographic location (country, region, city), your ISP, and your network's ASN (Autonomous System Number). It does not directly reveal your name, home address, or personal identity.

Why does my location show the wrong city?

IP geolocation is based on databases maintained by ISPs and third-party providers. The location shown is typically the registered location of your ISP's server or network block, which may differ from your actual physical location by tens or hundreds of kilometers.

How do I change my IP address?

For a dynamic IP, you can often get a new IP by restarting your modem. The most reliable way to change your visible IP is to use a VPN service, which replaces your IP with the VPN server's IP. Some ISPs also let you request a static IP for a fee.
